Rapper Silento, accused of murdering his cousin

Silento, the rapper behind the viral hit song “Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae),” was arrested. 23-year-old was charged with killing his older cousin, Frederick Rooks, 34.

According to the DeKalb County Police Department, 23-year-old Richard “Ricky” Lamar Hawk, was taken into custody on Monday (Feb. 1). Online prison records report that he is being held on one count of non-bonded felony murder.

The former rap star achieved global success in 2015 with his song and popular dance “Whip/Nae Nae.” His song was No. 3 on Billboard Hot 100, Complex reports.

At 3:30 a.m. on January 21, a series of gunshots were heard by neighbors in Panthersville, Georgia. Rooks was reported to have been found in the middle of a residential street with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead on the scene, writes the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.


Respondents were able to obtain video from multiple residents’ security cameras, reports the AJC. Videos captured at least one shotgun and showed a number of vehicles fleeing the scene.

Silento was arrested twice a week last year for two separate incidents.

ABC News affiliate KABC reported that the native of Atlanta was first arrested on 28 August for domestic violence and assault on deadly weapons charges in Orange County, California and Los Angeles. He was reserved, released and charged with inflicting corporal punishment on a spouse or cohabitant.


A day later, the rapper was arrested a second time and charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon by the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office.
